“Eating History” assignment and Extra Credit Opportunity

Two completely unrelated notes:

  • I have posted the full assignment for the Eating History project, describing the chapter selection, presentation, summary, and book review and presentation process. Check it out, especially the list of chapter titles and topics: you’ll have to select your chapters on September 20th.
  • Second, the following event will earn extra credit if you attend and write a short summary/reaction:

The Kansas Historical Society invites you to join us 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, September 25, at Fort Hays State Historic Site in Hays for the grand reopening of the site. This community event will feature live entertainment, history reenactors, children’s activities, and tours of new exhibits on the grounds and in the Visitor Center and Guardhouse. $3 admission includes souvenir button.
Performances include historic music by Zerf and first-person reenactments by an African American Buffalo Soldier and laundress, a Civil War field surgeon, and Plains photographer Alexander Gardner.
New exhibits in the Visitor Center depict the clash of cultures between native people and settlers. Visitors will also find an exhibit on Lieutenant Colonel George Custer and the Seventh Cavalry and their role at Fort Hays. For a limited time, one of Custer’s boots will be on display in the Visitor Center. Exhibits in the Guardhouse give visitors a glimpse into the everyday lives of enlisted soldiers. Life-size figures on the grounds tell the story of the fort’s buildings and people. Computerized interactive exhibits allow visitors to view the fort as it appeared at its closing in 1889, listen to songs and stories from the time of the fort, and assume the identity of a person who lived at Fort Hays.
The new exhibits were made possible with public and private support from the Preserve America Grant Program, National Park Service, Department of the Interior; Dane G. Hansen Foundation of Logan, Kansas; and Senator Robert Dole.
Fort Hays is located four miles south of Hays I-70 exit 157 at 1472 US Highway 183 Alt. Call 785-625-6812 for more information.
