A few resources you might find useful as you work on your book reviews
- A review assignment which I did in a previous semester includes a step-by-step breakdown of the writing process.
- Some examples of positive and negative reviews including a link to the history blog Cliopatria, which regularly posts links to reviews of academic histories in newspapers, magazines and other non-academic publications
- I post links to book reviews here, as well, usually under the “Doing History” tag
- I’ve written a few academic reviews which are available online
- No Sword to Bury
- Before Internment [PDF]
- Nisei/Sansei
- The Essence of Japanese Cuisine
- The last three reviews were published at H-Net which doesn’t have a word count limit, so they’re a bit longer than your assignment, but they still follow the model.
- and my most popular review: The Last Samurai. As a movie review, the issues are somewhat different, and I don’t recommend bullet lists for your essays.
- And last, but not least, here is the link to your book review assignment
